Noise Maker Profile: The GOASTT

The GOASTT? Don’t they know how to spell g-h-o-s-t? Well actually GOASTT stands for Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger. Hailing from New York City, NY the GOASTT features two multi instrumentalists Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl.

Sean Lennon is the son of the late Beatle John Lennon and the Japanese artist, singer-songwriter, and peace activist,Yoko Ono. Charlotte Kemp Muhl is a model, singer and musician born in Atlanta , Georgia.

The couple met at Coachella music festival in 2004 and formed the band in 2008. The name of the band is from a short story once written by Charlotte.

Growing up my parents listened to the Beatles so of course I enjoy the Beatles. I got to see the Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger open up for the flaming lips in 2012 I had high expectations for Sean Lennon’s band but that didn’t cut it…my mind was blown!!!

Noise Maker Profile: Surfer Blood

Surfer Blood is an alt rock band from West Palm Beach, Florida and is made up of:
John Paul Pitts (lead vocals/guitar)
Thomas Fekete (guitar/backing vocals)
Kevin Williams(bass guitar/backing vocals)
and Tyler Schwarz (drums).

Founding members John Paul Pitts and Tyler Schwarz started playing music together in Orlando, Florida. They met Thomas Fekete in Miami and the group was formed.

In March 2010, playing songs from their debut album Astro Coast, Surfer Blood made quite a splash at the SXSW NPR music party (and returned to SXSW in 2011).

I discovered Surfer Blood from NPRs All Songs Considered SXSW 2013 preview podcast. After hearing Demon dance a few times I was hooked.

On October 25th, 2011 Surfer Blood released the Tarot Classics EP on Kanine Records. The EP’s first single “Miranda” debuted on Pitchfork

on August 30th, 2011 and “I’m Not Ready” was named NPR’s Song of the Day on December 8th, 2011.

The band opened for the Pixies during their Doolittle Lost Cities Tour in 2011. The tour came about after Pitts met the Pixies in an airport in New Zealand and they said they were already familiar with Surfer Blood’s music. Surfer Blood performed a cover of their song “Gigantic” for the AV Club’s music-video series “AV Undercover”.

In May 2012 the band confirmed via their Twitter account that they were moving to California on May 12th 2012 to record their second album.

Surfer Blood will release Pythons on 6-11-2013.

My Thoughts On The Band Train

Back in 1998, when Train released their debut album Train it was way different than the pop driven music they are releasing now.

I believe at the time my family was a subscriber to BMG Music Club, The idea behind music subscription services was that you would pay a monthly flat fee and have music automatically sent to you on a monthly basis without you having to lift a finger. In addition you could choose other non featured CDs and have them sent to your house also. This second feature cost extra but it was the convenience factor that drove this service. Back to the subject at hand Train. I received Train’s debut album using this service. This was one of those albums you could actually press play and sit back and enjoy every single song that came through your speakers! This is a rarity that we are seeing less and less of these days.

Listen to Train by Train on Spotify:

With just enough edge to it and great songwriting Train entertained me so much that when time for 2000’s Drops Of Jupiter was released I had to have it as soon as it was released. This album proved to be great musicianship but less edge to it, moving more towards the pop feel and less rock feel that I really enjoyed of their first album. This ended up being the last Train album I purchased.

2003’s My Private Nation brought radio single “Calling All Angels” which is an ok song but doesn’t match the sound at all of the bands origins.

Listen to Calling All Angels by Train on Spotify:

Several years went by and in 2007 Pat Monahan lead singer for Train released a solo album with the single “Her Eyes” which I enjoyed and was glad that the name Train wasn’t used to release this.

Train took the rest of the first decade of 2000s off but came back in 2010 with Save Me, San Francisco featuring the single “Hey Soul Sister”. That song blew up and was everywhere and I hated how the sound changed.

Listen to Hey, Soul Sister by Train on Spotify:

I do realize that every band much change their sound to stay fresh and new but I really cannot stand the progression from the edgy alt rock sound to the pop over processed sounds that we hear today from Train. The final straw has been pulled with 2012’s release California 37 featuring the single ” 50 Ways To Say Goodbye” which in opinion is a total rip off of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom Of The Opera”. The first time I heard the track I could not place how I had already heard this song but knew it wasn’t a “cover” and wasn’t original in nature.

What are your thoughts? Thanks for reading my rant! I have wanted to share my thoughts on this for several years but with the release of ” 50 Ways To Say Goodbye” I could no longer stay quiet.

This edition is all about the up and coming buzz band-Imagine Dragons. this four piece indie band who call  Las Vegas, Nevada home had found its way into my ears thanks to a co-worker. The first listen was on a cell phone one morning after a long night at work, I was pretty tired but it wasn’t too bad. I didn’t really seek anymore information or music for about a week-until I was streaming a radio in Texas on IHeartRadio and they introduced Imagine Dragons, and My ears perked; HEY I know that name!!!

I am falling behind….

It has been awhile since I have posted a blog. I hope you guys have been doing ok! I have started working a second job a few days a week so all the extra time I get a few hours shut eye has been appreciated.

Fun. Some Nights

Besides the fact that “pop” radio-aka the corporate rehashing of the same ten songs; have been non stop playing the hit ” We Are Young” by Fun. I have really enjoyed this album even thou I just purchased it this last weekend. This album flows well and there is not a bad song on it, In my opinion. I would pair this with the likes of Foster The People and Gotye. Semi Electronic with some horns, which seems to be the norm for most of the 2012 releases. All those jocks that were picking on Band nerds back in High School are probably loving every minute of it… I know that I have enjoyed the return of these non traditional instruments into popular music.

The O Music Awards

In less than 24 hours the Third annual “The O Awards” will begin. Offbeat, Outrageous, Online: The O Music Awards, not your traditional awards show; is an awards show presented by Viacom to honor music, technology and intersection between the two also every year they have try to break some kind of Guinness Book of World Records

During with the inaugural O Music Awards in Las Vegas in April of 2011, rapper Chiddy of Chiddy Bang earned the Guinness World Records titles for the Longest Freestyle Rap and the Longest Marathon Rapping record after rapping for 9 hours, 16 minutes and 22 seconds.

For the second O Music Awards A group of 13 dancers assembled at The Roxy, in LA on Halloween Eve to take on this epic attempt of : Longest Team Dance Marathon. Twenty-four hours later, all 13 were still standing and seized the record.

This year is no Different, The Flaming Lips are attempting to beat Jay Z’s current record of the most Concerts in 24 hours (multiple city). There is no beef with the Rapper/Producer, just an attempt at a record.

The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends

One day after The Flaming Lips release their Record Store Day release (The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends) onto CD (Originally only available on limited quantity vinyl) , they will assemble with many of the collaborators on the album for this record attempt.

How can you watch the show? Head over to Http://WWW.OMusicAwards.Com Tomorrow at 7:30PM ET.

Its been great to have time to write this for you guys tonight, It’s time for me to wrap this up and get ready for work. Since Summer has officially started I wanted to do a blog on your Favorite Summer time songs or songs that remind you of some summer memory… you can tweet me—@SonicDishes or email:

The Biggest Christmas letdown….Or was it?

When I was in middle school or maybe even the end of elementary school I started taking a form of karate classes (American Ninjutsu) with my brother and sister and a couple friends from school. Our parents would take turns taking us and bringing us home. I remember James wasn’t even old enough to legally drive but sometimes he could drive home on the country roads.

Bon Jovi, Crossroads

I will never forget our friends ( John and Jessica)’s step dad (Terry) would play really awesome music—or at least at the time I thought it was cool. Terry would play Bon Jovi’s “Cross Road” CD and he would play Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.” I used to love singing out loud the songs “Livin’ on a Prayer”, “Wanted Dead or Alive”, “You Give Love a Bad Name”; but the one song that always stood out to me was Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2”. I LOVED that song so much and the very next Christmas I asked my mom for the Pink Floyd CD.

Pink Floyd’s The Wall

As I sit here writing this, now I don’t really remember if I told her the Wall, but I’m pretty sure I did. Well come Christmas morning as all the gifts had been handed out and we were about to open them up, I see a CD shaped gift… I was really excited to open it!!!! Anyone who knows about that specific album knows it a double Disk; I however did not have a clue. Honestly I really only wanted that one song…

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon

As I opened the gift and saw the above album in my hands my heart SUNK! What is this?!?!?! Didn’t she understand that this is NOT PINK FLOYD’S THE WALL?!?!?! I wasn’t normally like this as a kid, let me assure you of that, But I REALLY wanted the wall more than anything that Christmas and she got me this CRAP?

I know now that this was one of my Favorite gifts I have ever received from anyone. This album flows so great and the lady who sings scat style on it still gives me chills to this day. As the years went by I have gained a greater love for Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here

About six years ago I met a guy named Jon [funny how two friends named John/Jon got my into this great band Pink Floyd in one way or another] that told me about an album named “Wish You Were Here” also by the Floyd. This is a Very Close second favorite album by them and funny enough that Christmas my Mom and Keith bought me this album. The two most valued albums in my huge collection were both Christmas gifts from my mom and it all started with the biggest Christmas letdown…. Or Was it????

Sadly enough I’m not sure 100% if I ever really got to tell me mom how much I really loved that CD. Also it was not until maybe a month or two ago that I was back in touch with Terry Via FaceBook and was finally able to tell him how once I found out about DSOTM and WYWH how I wondered why he never told me about how great Pink Floyd was. But I’m also glad that I had the Experiences I did learning about these two great albums…

Leave me a comment, what was an album that you stumbled across or were given that ended up being really Awesome or share thoughts on this Blog Entry….

Record Store Day- April 21, 2012

I left work at 6:00 am and was ready for my first ever Record Store Day experience to begin. I got on I-40 heading west from Kernersville to Winston-Salem, took the Hanes Mall exit and got EXTREMELY Nervous. How many people had camped out over night and held their spots in line? To my surprise the line wasn’t too bad! Turns out there were only 13 people in front of me.

I had come to Earshot in search of what they had posted the day before saying they didn’t have, the new collaboration album-The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.

The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends is a collaborative album by The Flaming Lips. Recorded throughout 2011 and 2012, the album was released as a limited edition on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 21, 2012. featuring Ke$ha, Biz Markie, Bon Iver, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Prefuse 73, Tame Impala, Jim James, Nick Cave, Lightning Bolt, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Neon Indian, Erykah Badu, New Fumes, Chris Martin

Everyone in the crowd is all talking about this record. Everyone seemed to know something about Wayne Coyne, his crazy house, The Flaming Lips and how this album is so rare, its going to be hard to find and worst of all how they ALL wanted it. I wasn’t going to leave because I had faith that I could get this!!!

Some guy walked up looking for a Phish release and three other guys said that’s what they are going for and he left. It’s worth trying to get it in my opinion, you never know what you may find inside the store!

45 minutes until they open… Oh my gosh come on!!!! A guy showed up and announced that there would be numbers handed out.The numbers also are a way for you to win a $20 gift card for the store that’s pretty cool! They will allow only 10 people in at a time to control the crowd. OK, I’m really not going to get it now! DANG IT!!!

Raffle Ticket

Some older guy behind me a few people was talking about how he saw this band or this band in 1980, 1985, etc. His brain must have been FRIED from too many drugs growing up. He voice had that certain sound to it, you know what I mean…

Ok, time to enter the store…The guy at the door told us they had 14 copies of the Album, YES, unless everyone in front of me gets one and someone gets two I can get it!!!!!

The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends LP

YESSSSSSS I found it!!!! I’m pretty sure I got the LAST one. I was so Happy I had to snap a photo and send it to Melissa! I ended up getting the Flaming Lips/Mastodon “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton” split 45 as well.

While I was in line, some lady comes in practically in tears, she wants a Coldplay 45 and cant find it. “Ill bargain with someone, who has it, I Want it so badly” she says. No one answers… she says it again…Some guy holds it up and gives it to her. She rushes to him and hugs him.

This is what Record Store Day is all about, kind of like back at the first Woodstock Music Festival, people taking care of people and being kind to each other; For the love of music. I don’t think I could have given up my Record but I wasn’t tested in that manner at least not this time…
Once I got home and had breakfast with Melissa, we drove out to CFBG in Greensboro, NC in search of Foster The People’s 45 “Broken Jaw”/”Ruby” with no luck. However, we did pick up The Black Keys’ “El Camino” which included the CD version and poster as well!
so Record Store 2012 was a Success all in all for me. I cant wait for next year…

THePETEBOX, an electronic/rock artist and YouTube sensation

THePETEBOX is an electronic/rock artist and YouTube sensation from the UK. Pete uses what would be a traditional Guitar Loop Pedal to layer vocals and his beatboxing to create original songs as well as Covers.

I first came across his cover of the Pixies “Where is my mind” on YouTube. I am a bit ashamed to say that I haven’t educated myself in the Pixies very much so this was a new song for me; and I fell in LOVE with this video and song. I had to watch Every video this guy did, I was HOOKED!

Being a Nirvana fan, I saw that he covered Lithium so that was the very next video I listened to, this guy is AMAZING!

He just finished releasing his last video for his Album and now has released his Debut Album Future Loops, which is available on iTunes and other Digital outlets
